16 Days of Activism

The 16 Days of activism Against Gender Violence begin on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25 and end on International Human Rights Day on December 10.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women was designated in 1999 by the United Nations General Assembly. The date was chosen at the first Feminist Encounter for Latin America and the Caribbean held in Bogota, Colombia, in 1981, to commemorate the lives of the Mirabal sisters from the Dominican Republic who were violently assassinated on 25th November, 1960.

Gender-based violence affects us all. It destroys families, weakens the fabric of our society, and takes a heavy toll on our communities and our economy. Australians are reminded during the 16 Days of Activism that they can take actions to eliminate violence against women and girls in all its forms.
